Couple weeks ago I was browsing Craigslist in the Musical Instrument section and stumble across I pretty nice keyboard for $180. It’s a Roland model EM 2000. I always wanted a new keyboard but couldn’t really afford the Tyros or other high end keyboards. I was skeptical at first not sure if I could port some Yamaha Styles onto it. But I was able to and it sounds great. Check out the sample video below:

If you have this model or looking for a similar one I would try searching for it on Craigslist first by typing on Google “Roland EM 2000 Craigslist” . But first try searching in your local Craigslist area first. You might also want to try Ebay as well.

If you have this keyboard or similar model and want to test out some of my ported styles for them you could download it here.

When you are playing a keyboard and you want to change the voice sometime it could kill the flow of music. One of the ways to avoid this is by setting a voice split on your keyboard. On a Yamaha PSR S900 for example, you can have up to three voices on a full range keyboard. For example you can set the piano sound from key 67 to 80 and from key 82 to 87 you can have a guitar sound and from 87 to what ever you can set to the sounds of flute.. so this will gives you a quick access to the voice without having to press on any button on the keyboard for voice change. Check out the example clip..

An example of a good flowing voice performance.

First, learn how to play the chords. You could download the keyboard chord chart from this post and start practice playing them. I would suggest you start out with learning these chords first – Dm F Gm Am C Bb – When you learn these five chords you could play just about all Lao country songs out there because with the keyboard you could use the transpose button for scaling the notes.

Second, learn the melody. For me I used a program call Vanbaso. I just load in the midi file of a song that I want to learn. Mute all the channels except for the melody and a play along with it. And if I want to get the chords for the song I would mute all the channels except for the guitar chord. You could also lower the tempo if it is too fast for you. Pretty cool program to get the chord and the melody part.

If you are not a visual person then I would suggest this program Midi2Notation. Just get the player version it is free! With this program you could print out the melody part of a song or just the guitar chord. Check it out!

The key here is to learn the chord of a song, the melody and then bringing them together. Have fun!

Download these programs, a free midi and test them out. This is how I learn! If you like to share with us how you learn your keyboard lessons please post it here.
